Chettinad is a place located in the Sivangangai district India. It is historically ruled by the Ramnad kingdom of Pandya Nadu. Which is extending into Chola Nadu of Pudukottai district India. Introduction

Chettinad is famous for its seven major temples (Nagarakovils), shared by the nine village clusters found around Karaikudi. Ilayathangudi is the first temple to be built among 7 Nagarakovils. The temple is about 25 km from most villages. It is believed that the temple ground served because of the resting place for the Lords, once they traveled during this region, thousands of years ago.

About the Ilayathankudi Temple

Ilayathankudi Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is located in the Sivaganagai district. The main deities present in the temple are Lord Shivan as Kailasanatahar and Lord Amman as Nithayakalyani. It is one of the oldest Nagarathar temples. This place is believed as a god resting place so that is named as:
Ilaippu= tiredness, atru= removal, kudi= place 

History of Kailasanathar temple

This is the place where the 65th Acharya of Kandhi Madam, Swamy Sudarsana Mahadevendra Saraswathi attained Samadhi in 1891. The Chettiars have constructed a temple within the adishtanam in memory of the Acharya. Nearly 5 decades back, Mahaperiaval observed Chaturmasyam during this place.

There are many buses from Karaikudi to Ilayathankudi passing Neemam, Keelasevalpati and Avinipati.
