Iraniyur Aatkondanathar Temple

The Iraniyur Aatkondanathar temple is located at a distance of 25km from Karaikudi on Pillayarpatti road. The main deity in this temple is Aatkondanathar and Amman Sivapuradevi. It is one of the oldest temples and has beautiful idols since the 12th century.


The dancing Shiva-Natraja is one of the most famous idols in this temple. This Iranyur temple also belongs to nine Nagarathar temples. This temple is meant to be the sub-temple of every other Nagarathar Temple at Ilayathankudi. The Aatkondanathar temple is full of marvelous paintings around the walls.

History of Aatkondanathar Temple


As consistent with legend, Vishnu was affected dosham after killing Hiranyakasipu. He is meant to have were given alleviation after praying the Lord here. Hence this area is referred to as Hiranyanoor which later has become Iraniyur.  Lord is likewise referred to as Narasimmeswarar as he was worshipped by Narasimhar.

One specialty in this temple is that from the front mandapam, one can have darshan of each Vimanam and Sanctorum. Ambal Sivapurandevi being the sister of Narasimha is also believed to be fierce and her fury is thought to be dissipated thru 9 cracks in pillars withinside the Mandapam in the front of her shrine.

Lord Murugan withinside the praharam is giving darshan together along with his consorts Deivanai and Valli and all 3 of them take a seat down on their respective peacocks, that's unusual. Bhairavar's shrine is close to the Ambal shrine and He offers darshan together along with his Vahanam, dog.

Festivals in Iraniyur Temple

Special poojas are supplied at the Ashtamis and the yearly festival withinside the Tamil month of Karthigai ( Champaka Shasti ) is marked for unique features and poojas for Bhairavar.  Since this kshetra has the presence of each Narasimhar and Bhairava, further to the furious Ambal, human beings pray right here to control anger.
  • Karthigai Sashti in the months of November and December
  • Maha Shivaratri in the months of February and March
  • Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in the months of December and January.
