Introduction to Murudeshwar Temple

Murudeshwar Temple is located in Karnataka India. It is situated in the Murdeshwar town of Uttara Kannada district. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is one of the famous temples in Karnataka. It attracts many tourists throughout the year to see the tallest statue of lord shiva. Murudeshwara is the second largest statue of Lord Shiva in the world. The Murudeshwar temple is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on 3 sides which are located in Kanduka hill and it is named as Peninsula.

Structure and overview of the temple

In the main temple's entrance, there is a 'gopura' that stands at 123 feet. There you'll witness the breathtaking view of the Shiva statue from the highest of the gopuram.

The entire surface of this temple is roofed within the most intricate and detailed carvings that you simply will ever see. The compound of the temple has been modernized except the sanctum sanctorum, which retains its original form. The most deity of the temple is that the Sri Mridesa Linga, which is believed to be a neighborhood of the first Atma Linga.


The Shiva statue here is sort of a powerful one and can surely leave you with a humble sense of tranquillity. This magnificent statue may be a perfect tribute to a God who is held in high reverence in lands far and wide.

The architecture of Murudeshwar Temple

The Statue of Lord Shiva is near the Murudeshwara Temple, which is on top of a little hill called Kanduka Giri. The temple architecture features a tall 20 storied Gopuram. In the Murudeshwara Temple entrance, there are two large, life-size concrete elephants the steps leading up to the temple. Near this temple is that the Huge Statue of Lord Shiva, 130 ft high.


The statue at Murudeshwara was commissioned by Mr. R.N.Shetty who is a businessman and philanthropist. The statue was sculpted by a team of sculptors led by Shivamogga’s Kashinath. The statue has been placed such it gets direct sunlight.

History of Murudeshwar Temple

Legend says that the Atma Linga or the Soul of Shiva was the key to invincibility and immortality. Demon King Ravana decided upon acquiring it that he devoutly prayed to Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva granted him the Atma Linga, on the condition that it must not be placed on the bottom before he reaches Lanka. However, Lord Ganesh and Lord Vishnu tricked him into putting the Linga on the bottom, post which it got attached and was rendered immovable.


Livid with anger, Ravana tried to destroy the Linga, but the force of his attack only managed to scatter the Linga to different places, which gave rise to several a sacred spot throughout the country, one among them being Murudeshwar.

Morning 3 am to afternoon 1 pm
Afternoon from 3 pm to nite at 8 pm

Dress code

Women: Sarees and churidars with dupattas are only allowed. Leggings, jeans, t-shirts are not allowed.
Men: Dhoties are only allowed. T-shirts, jeans, pants are not allowed.

Transportation

  • By rail

It has a small railway station named Mangaluru-Mumbai Konkan railway station. Only some trains from Mumbai to Mangalore stops there.

  • By bus

Bus facilities are available.
