Tomb of Salim Chishti, Fatehpur Sikri
Tomb of Salim Chishti is located in Agra, India. It is situated in the Fatehpur Sikri fort.It is one of the examples of Mughal architecture. It was built by Akbar in the year 1580 - 1581. The Tomb of Salim Chishti is an imperial complex at Fatehpur Sikri facing towards Buland Darwaza in the south.
History of Salim Chishti
The Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti may be a beautiful and luxurious structure inbuilt the first 16th century. The famous Mughal emperor Akbar built this tomb as a tribute to the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who had forecasted that he would have a son.Akbar had been praying for a son for an extended time and had almost given hope. The saint’s blessings came true and Akbar has blessed a son soon after. He was named Salim, after the saint, and later became known as Jahangir.
The architecture of Salim Chishti's Tomb
The tomb has been constructed on a platform that is about 1 m. high, a flight of 5 steps resulting in the doorway portico. the most tomb building is enclosed by delicate marble screens on all sides, and therefore the tomb is found within the center of the most hall, which features a single semi-circular dome.The marble building gives an ivory-like appearance and elegantly carved. The plinth is arranged in geometric patterns and ornamented with mosaics of black and yellow marble. The marble cenotaph is surrounded by an enclosure of "Chhaparkhat" which is always covered with green cloth. A wooden canopy encrusted with mother-of-pearl inlay mosaic over it.
The door to the most chamber is intricately carved with arabesque patterns and bears inscriptions from the Quran. Brown marble borders the inside bays while the relief panels - with the Quran verses - have a blue background. Many multicolored stones lie inbuilt in the beautiful white marble floor, that features a carved and excellent painting chamber in it. The multicolored stones also are a bit of diamond ruby or emerald.
