Jama Masjid Delhi

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. It is located in Delhi India. It is situated in the older part of Delhi, now called Chandni chowk. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is one of the famous attractions in Delhi. Jama Masjid is known as Masjid-i Jehan Numa "Mosque of the Celestial Sphere". It took around one million rupees for the construction of the building. It is completed in the year 1656 and took nearly 5000 workers.

History of Jama Masjid

Designed and planned by Ostad Khalil, Jama Masjid was commissioned on July 23, 1656, when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan moved his capital to Delhi from Agra after the death of his wife.

A 'madrasa' near the southern end of the mosque was destroyed during the revolt of 1857, and therefore the mosque was confiscated with the intention of demolition, but the British government had to retreat thanks to severe protests and opposition. It's almost a reproduction of Moti Masjid in Agra.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Jama Masjid is from 12pm and between 2 to 4pm. If you are planning to take part in the Namaz prayers, then you can visit the mosque around 4.30 to 5.30 pm.

Festivals in Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid is famous for its festival of Eid. Ramadan is another important festival that takes place in the streets of Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk. Delicious street food festival takes place in the mosque. Iftar meals are served to everyone in the mosque, it is a famous event. one should not miss out on the exquisite kebabs and food pop-ups on the streets.

Entry fees of Jama Masjid

  • Entry is free for all, if you want to visit the tower, it is additionally charged with Rs. 100. For photography its Rs.200.
  • The shoes should be removed before entering the place. While visiting Jama Masjid remember not to wear short skirts, shorts, and no sleeveless tops.

Timings of Jama Masjid

It opens in the morning from 7 am to an afternoon at 12 pm and again from 1.30 pm to evening at 6.30 pm. It is open every day of the week.

  • By road

One can plan by taking your vehicle and get parked on Shantivana Marg. Parade ground parking is another option.
