Sri Bannari Amman Temple Erode

Sri Bannari Amman Temple is located in the erode district, near Sathyamangalam. It is one of the famous Amman temples in Tamilnadu. It is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, it is a powerful goddess of the rain. Mostly in the Kongu region, every village has a small Mariamman temple.

History of the temple

In ancient days Tamil Nadu consisted of 5 divisions referred to as Chera Nadu, Chozha Nadu, Pandiya Nadu, Thondai Nadu, and Kongu Nadu. On the western side of Tamil Nadu, was the Kongu Nadu situated. Mountains, rivers, and forests added beauty to the present fertile soil. Of late, it's become pilgrim’s paradise because devotees from far and near visit this spot. It's held in high esteem because of the celebrated abode of Goddess Mariamman. 


The temple facing south and it's surrounding by thick forests with verdant vegetation on the southern, northern, and western directions. The range of mountains and therefore the hilly backdrop adds charm to the abode of the deity. Beasts like elephants, wild pigs, bears, deer, hares, and monkeys are found within the surrounding forests. Beautiful peacocks and various birds also are seen here. An object medium sound was heard by everyone who has assembled there.

In response thereto message, the villagers Erected a shed with ‘KANANGU’ a sort of forest herbs. In due course, the thatched ceiling was replaced by a tiled ceiling. Funds were collected from philanthropists and therefore the temple structure underwent renovation repeatedly and, the gopuram was built above the SANCTUM – SANCTORIUM.


 Shobana Mantapa ahead of the temple with 24-pillared Mantapa with carvings of architectural beauty was constructed in 1967. The Artha Mantapa, Maha Mantapa, and Shobana Mantapa enhance the sweetness of the temple. Vinayaka, Bommairayan, Madeswara SARUGU Mariamman, and Muniyappa are the separate shrines found in and around the temple. The Bommarayan temple is in Artha mandapam facing side and therefore the Ganesh temple is ahead mandapam facing east. On the southern side of the Goddess temple, God Matheshwaran is placed on a slab. Near the temple pond, a little temple facing west is made for Sarugu Mariamman is placed. 


The Kumbhabishegam for this temple was conducted on the second of this month. On the side of the temple pond, an enormous pit is present. therein pit water is going to be stagnant only on rainy seasons. On other seasons water won’t stagnate there. To the left side of the thanks to the temple pond, God VandiMuniappar is placed on a slab. During the festival for the goddess, the people of the Cholar caste do special poojas for this God.

Festivals

One of the famous festivals in the Bannari Amman temple is the Kundam festival. It occurs during the Tamil month of Panguni. This festival is celebrated for 20 days and it attracts a crowd of over five lakhs peoples.

Other celebrations in Bannari Amman temple are Tamil & English new year, Deepavali festival, Pongal festival, and new moon days. On new moon days, the temple will be somewhat crowded.

  • Kalasandi Poojai at 5:30 A.M
  • Ucchi Kala Poojai at 11:30 A.M
  • Saiyarachi Poojai at 5:30 P.M
  • Arthajamam Poojai at 8:30 P.M
  • Thiruvilaku pooja happens on Fridays of every month and many women devotees participate in that pooja.

Evening from 4 pm to 9 pm.

Transportation

  • By rail

Mettupalayam is the nearest railway station. Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Chamarajanagar are the other nearest railway station.
  • By bus
There are buses from Bhavanisagar and reach the temple via Kothamangalam, but it's a little bit long distance to reach Bannnari. An alternate way is to get the bus from Sathayamangalam, Thalavadi, Punjai puliampatti, and reach Bannari. On the special occasions of the temple, there are some special buses available to the temple from Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, and Gobichettipalayam.

Coimbatore airport is the nearest airport to reach Bannari.
