Jama Masjid Delhi Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. It is located in Delhi India. It is situated in the older part of Delhi, now called Chandni chowk. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is one of the famous attractions in Delhi. Jama Masjid is known as Masjid-i Jehan Numa "Mosque of the Celestial Sphere". It took around one million rupees for the construction of the building. It is completed in the year 1656 and took nearly 5000 workers. History of Jama Masjid Designed and planned by Ostad Khalil, Jama Masjid was commissioned on July 23, 1656, when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan moved his capital to Delhi from Agra after the death of his wife. A 'madrasa' near the southern end of the mosque was destroyed during the revolt of 1857, and therefore the mosque was confiscated with the intention of demolition, but the British government had to retreat thanks to severe protests and opposition.
