Introduction to Seashell Museum

One of the foremost popular tourist attractions in Mahabalipuram, Indian Seashell Museum is legendary amongst people of all age groups. The museum is forts of its kind in India and therefore the largest one India. On display are around 40,000 sorts of shells alongside details about them. These shells are collected by K Raja Mohamed, the founding father of the museum.


The museum also has oysters and snails with information about their sizes and origin. There are car, ship, train, plane, etc. made up of shell, which has been placed on display. There are four galleries.

The museum also features a plaza, called Maya bazaar, where visitors can get their hands on different interesting items that are made up of sea products like oysters and conch shells. The place has beautiful pearl jewelry. there's also a little aquarium within the complex, called Fish World, which houses colorful fishes. there's a seafood restaurant too, Fresh ‘n Live Sea Food. The museum complex is spread in a neighborhood one and a half acres of land.


History of the Museum

A seashell enthusiast and lover, K Raja Mohamed, once upon a time, set across to gather seashells from across all the places that he happened to go to. He had a dream. And it had been about creating a museum of his own with amazing sorts of seashells collected from across the planet. After 33 years of meticulous effort and wonderful zeal, this person actually went ahead and opened a museum. That’s how the India Seashell Museum came into being within the first place. 

Actually, K Raja Mohamed sold out his family property to create this museum. Finally, the India Seashell Museum was opened to the general public in 2013. It all started when K Raja Mohamed made a visit to Sri Lanka in 1980. then he visited Kenya, Thailand, Vietnam, America, and a number of other destinations, collecting different seashells on his journey.



In total there are some 6000 different sorts of seashell species. And Mohamed managed to capture some 2300 of those. they're proudly on display at India Seashell Museum. However, his quest was still not over. He knew he can’t collect all of them together lifetime isn't enough for it but he just wanted to gather as more as possible.

Fish Pedicure


Just outside the aquarium may be a provision for a fish pedicure. If you're interested, you'll choose it. it's a fast quarter-hour session where you get a fish pedicure of your choice from amongst an inventory of options. And it costs extra, on top of the overall entry ticket to the museum.

Seashell and pearl shop

There is also a store inside the India Seashell Museum campus. This shop mostly consists of various sorts of decor items decorated or made up of seashells. as an example, it includes picture frames and mirrors decorated in seashells, some showpieces made out of seashells, keychains, and lots of other such souvenirs quite items. Also, the shop has real pearls and a few pieces of jewelry made out of those pearls on offer. Then there are other items made out of stone, wood, and general handicraft. 

Overall, the shop features a good collection. Although we didn’t buy anything, we did take one round of the shop to ascertain the collections on display and that we liked what we saw. the costs seem to be reasonable, so, you'll buy something from here if you're looking to hold some souvenir with you.
